The Southern Railway was formed in 1894, and Samuel Spencer, the Railway's first President, began looking for a location to build the Railway's repair shops. It was to be halfway between Washington, D.C. and Atlanta, GA. John Henderson, a Senator from Rowan County, purchased 144 acres of area farmland and sold it to Southern Railway at no profit.
