     2.  Conrad2 Lingle (Conrad1) was born 1695 in Roershain, Treysa-Hesse, Germany, and died Bef. 1738 in Erpolzheim, Ungstein, Palatinate, Germany.  He met (1) Anna Christina Bidebach 01/17/1717-18 in Ungstein, Germany.    He met (2) Anna Maria Witmaier 1735 in Erpolzheim, Ungestein, Germany.

Notes for Conrad Lingle:

On the 17th of January, here in Ungstein, by the Reformed Reverend Hirten

from Erpolzheim, 'prutatim', due to a rain storm, at Andreas Dilger's barn,

were joined in marriage the unmarried Conrad Lingel, Reformed religion, the

remaining legitimate son of the deceased Hanns Conrad Lingel, former citizen

and resident of Rocktenhayn in the county of Hesse Kassel, and with him the

unmarried Anna Christina, Lutheran religion, legitimate remaining daughter

of the deceased Casper Bidebach, former local citizen and chairman, which I

also have announced three times during open church service.

1727 :

The 12th of February, twins are born, namely first Anna Elisabeth Baerin, in

the afternoon around 3 o'clock, and half hour later, her sister Anna

Christina Baerin. The parents, Johann Georg Baer, 'ad differentiam

caterorium', Bidebach's stepson, and the mother Anna Christina, nee

Bannebeckerin, her husband's married wife, both of Lutheran religion, and

they had there two twins baptized since they both were frail, the next day,

the 13th of the same month, a Thursday at noon by myself in the living room

of there house in Ungstein. For the first, the Godparents are the honorable

Hans Nicolaus Stayer, community chairman and master wheel wright here, and

his virtuous wife, Anna Elisabetha, both Lutheran religion, and for the

second, the Godparents are the modest Conrad Lingel, Reformed citizen and

resident, here, and his virtuous wife, Anna Christina, Lutheran religion,

the father's step sister, nee Bidebachin.

Notes for ANNA CHRISTINA BIDEBACH:

No.1; 1734 :

The 5th of January, the day before Three Kings Day, in the morning at 9

o'clock died an unexpected however honorable death, the christian spouse

Anna Christina Lingel in her high pregnancy and with her child in her womb.

She was born into this world in the year 1676, here, by Christian parents,

and she was then baptized and raised in the Lutheran faith. Her father was

the former chairman Casper Bidebach, from here, of Reformed religion and the

mother was Anna Catharina, the fathers married wife, of Lutheran religion,

and when she lived through the year 1719, in the beginning of the same, she

was married with the Reformed farmer Conrad Lingel......and with the

blessing of her church she lived with him in marriage for 15 years and

brought forth two sons and two daughters and it is God's will, the oldest

daughter Anna Maria, due to her mother's foresight, has still been confirmed

in the Lutheran church, and the children should stand by the father, as it

is Gods will. Otherwise she was a very good mother to her children, and a

friendly neighbor and even though her body was frail, she was a deligent

housewife and above all a good christian, who gladly went to church and

diligently took part in communion, and the deceased went to church the last

time on Christmas and I saw her a second time, especially since I saw that

she was with one foot in the grave. God kept her body and soul in hope that

he also in the future takes her to him, after she lived in this world for 38

years less 4 months. She was buried the 6th of the same month, on Three

Kings Day.

Fact 1: 1775, Will, list children, Rowan Co. NC.

Fact 2: 1763, His naturlazation record

Fact 3: 1759, copy of Rowan Tax List

Lorentz Lingle of Rowan County, North Carolina (1726 - 1775)

Some people believe Lorentz Lingle was born in Germany in 1726 (I'm not completely convinced this is the right Lorentz Lingle). See IGI. (There are listings for a "Lorenz Lingel" born 1726, and for a "Lorenzo Lingle" also born 1726, probably both the same person.)

It has been reported that Lorentz Lingle arrived in America in 1754 aboard the ship Phoenix. This is incorrect. The Ship Phoenix arrived at Philadelphia on 2 Nov 1752. There was no Lorentz Lingle, but there was a Lorentz Mangel aboard.

On 21 Dec 1761, Lorentz Lingle bought 572 acres in southern Rowan County, on Dutch Second Creek, from the agents of Lord Granville. He was naturalized as a British citizen 22 Sep 1763 at the courthouse in Salisbury, Rowan Co, NC, along with several other "natives of Germany," including my ancestors, John Bushart and Jacob Fullenwider. In 1774, Lorentz donated 16 acres of his land to the German Reformed Church, of which he was a member. Grace Lowerstone Church, which is still used to this day, was built on that land.

We know Lorentz Lingle died in July 1775. He left a will in German (which luckily has been tranlated to English) dated 9 Jun 1775. In the will, he lists his widow, Eve Catherine; sons Francis (Franz), Casper, Conrad, Jacob, Wendle, and Anthony; and daughters Catherine, Elizabeth, and Anna Maria. Of all his children, only Casper was "of age" (over 21) when Lorentz wrote his will. Casper was born 2 May 1754 and Lorentz Lingle ("Lingel" in the will) signed his will 9 Jun 1775, a month and 7 days after Casper turned 21, the legal age of adulthood then. Casper Lingle witnessed his father's will, aong with Michael Holtzhauser and John Arends (he was the pastor of the Organ Lutheran Church in Rowan Co, NC). It was considered a little dubious to have your son witness your will, because he was not exactly impartial. If I recall correctly, some of the testimony in the 1804 lawsuit (see below) involved when Casper Lingle was born and if he was actually old enough to have been a witness to his father's will. Casper's birthdate of 2 May 1754 may come from this testimony, but I do not remember. I only copied the parts that linked the Troutmans to the Lingles. Lorent's will also state that Jacob was his youngest son.

An interesting point about Lorentz' will: Lorentz did not die of old age, but rather of illness, which he states in his will. If the Lorentz Lingle born in Germany in 1726 is the correct Lorentz Lingle, he was only 49 when we wrote his will and died soon thereafter. Very few people back then had the presence of mind to write a will when faced with a chronic illness.

Wendle Miller and John Lippard were the executors of Lorentz's will. Lorentz died with quite a bit of land in Rowan County. Wendle Miller and John Lippard held Lorentz's land in trust, and as each son turned 21, gave them their share of Lorentz's land. Lorentz's son Wendle died as a boy shortly after his father. Wendle Miller and John Lippard sold Wendle Lingle's share outside the Lingle family, which apparently upset the rest of Lorentz's children, because they sued Wendle Miller and John Lippard in 1804. The case was heard 31 Mar 1804 in the Salisbury District Court of Law and Equity, Judge John Hall presiding. All this can be found in the estate records of Lorentz Lingle.

In these estate records we find who married Lorentz's daughters: Catherine married Peter Troutman, Elizabeth married Jacob Troutman, and Ann Maria married Peter Limbaugh (this marriage was also recorded by Pastor Storch as Maria Lingle to Peter Leinbach 28 Jul 1791). We also find that Conrad Lingle had died, and that Peter Troutman (husband of Catherine Lingle) is the guardian of his sons Conrad and George Lingle. Pastor Storch preached the funeral of Conrad Lingle on 15 Oct 1794. In Cabarrus court records, Peter Troutman was named the administrator of Conrad's estate.

As an aside, it would be great if someone transcribed the entire lawsuit, which can be found in the estate records of Lorentz Lingle in Rowan Co, NC. I think there were 20 or 30 pages to it. It has lots of detail from the court precedings, with actual questions posed to witnesses and their answers. There is probably a lot more info that can be gleaned from the estate records of Lorentz Lingle.

Lorentz Lingle's widow, Eve Catherine, was listed in the 1778 tax list of Rowan, and was likely the female over 45 in the household of her son Anthony Lingle in Rowan Co, NC in the 1800 Census. She probably died between 1800 and 1804, because she is not named as legatee of Lorentz Lingle in the 1804 lawsuit. Eve Catherine's maiden name has been reported as CHATREN, but this is almost certainly a misreading of "Catherine" in old German handwriting (I have seen this mistake with a couple other Catherines in my family tree). Note that I call her Eve Catherine, simply because I try to stick to the English equivalents of names when writing about these people. In German, she was probably "Eva Katarina." Of course, I have not been entirely consistent about using the English equivalents of names, since "Lorentz" (or "Lorenz" or "Lorenzo") is "Lawrence" or "Laurence" in English. The early Germans in America are generally listed by their German names in records they kept or wrote themselves (church and bible records, wills), but are listed by their English names in most civil records (court and tax records, censuses).

The follwing is a table of Lorentz's children, their birth, and an explanation of how I came up with the "guestimate" of their birth:

 Name Birth Explanation

Casper 2 May 1754 not sure of source of this date

Francis c1755 age 70-79 in 1830 Census of Rowan Co, NC

Conrad c1758 first marriage circa 1782

Catherine c1761 age 88 in 1850 Census of Cabarrus Co, NC (listed as Catherine Troutman)

Wendell c1763 older than Jacob according to Lorentz's will, died as a boy in 1776

Anthony c1764 age 50-59 in 1830 Census of Union Co, IL, but must have been older since Lorentz's will states that Jacob was the youngest son

Jacob c1765 age 84 in 1850 Census of Union Co, IL

Elizabeth c1770 married Jacob Troutman c1792, first child born 22 Jul 1793

Anna Maria c1772 married Peter Limbaugh 28 Jul 1791, age 50-59 in 1830 Census of Franklin Co, TN

Children of Lorentz Lingle and Eva Unknown are:

+   5          i.   John Jacob4 Lingle, born 1765 in Cabarrus County, NC; died 02/18/1852 in Union County, Illinois.

+   6         ii.   Francis Lingle, born 1755 in Rowan County, NC; died 08/30/1834 in Rowan County, NC.

Notes for Wendle George Lingle:

Wendell Lingle (c1763 - 1776), son of Lorentz Lingle

Little is known of Wendell, except that he died as a boy soon after his father died in 1775. Wendle Miller and John Lippard, the executors of Lorentz Lingle's will, sold Wendle Lingle's share outside the Lingle family, which apparently upset the rest of Lorentz's children, because they sued Wendle Miller and John Lippard in 1804.

+   10      vi.   Anthony Lingle, born Bet. 1768 - 1770 in Rowan County, NC; died 10/19/1836 in Jonesboro, Illinois, Union County.

Generation No. 4

     5.  John Jacob4 Lingle (Lorentz3, Conrad2, Conrad1) was born 1765 in Cabarrus County, NC, and died 02/18/1852 in Union County, Illinois.  He met Anna Maria Cruse 08/07/1788 in Rowan County, NC, daughter of Johann Cruse and Anna Stumpf.  She was born 05/27/1764 in Red Hill, Montgomery, Pennsylvania, and died 1854 in Union County, Illinois.

 Notes for John Jacob Lingle:

at Johann Worchert's, after three public announcements, which I made during

open church service they were joined in marriage thereafter on the 27th of

December on Johannes the Evangelist's Day. Because the groom was Reformed,

they were married by the Erpolzheimer Reformed Reverend Saaler, who also

served Ungstein as a branch, here in the Reformed church in the name of the

(Augusta is now Rockingham Co.)

Jacob Lingle (c1765 - 18 Feb 1852), son of Lorentz Lingle

Full name was probably John Jacob Lingle. Born in Rowan Co, NC. Maried Anna Maria Cruse (Gruss, Gross) on 7 Aug 1788 in Rowan Co, NC. Moved to Butler Co, OH about 1808, and purchased 500 acres on 1 Aug 1813 in Butler Co on the Great Miami River along with his brother-in-law, Jacob Troutman (husband of Elizabeth Lingle, although she may have died by 1813). Later sold his share to Jacob Troutman.

NOTE: There was another Lingle family in Butler Co, OH. This family came from Pennsylvania, and was possibly distantly related to the Lingles from North Carolina.

All of Jacob Lingle's children except one were born in NC (Rowan or Cabarrus). Paul Lingle, Jacob's youngest child, was born about 1808 in Butler Co, OH. At least two of Jacob's children married in Butler Co, OH. Daughter Catherine Lingle married Samuel Garver 20 Mar 1808, and Jacob Lingle, Jr. married Rosana Beaver 11 Dec 1817. Several German families from Rowan/Cabarrus moved to Butler Co, OH, including the families of Lingle, Troutman, Garver, Beaver, Cruse, and Fisher.

Jacob Lingle owned land in Dearborn Co, IN and Ripley Co, IN (he bought land in Ripley on 8 Feb 1817). Dearborn Co, IN is adjacent to Butler Co, OH, and Ripley Co, IN is just west of Dearborn. Jacob Lingle may also have lived in Posey Co, IN for a while (Posey Co is in the SW corner of Indiana). Jacob's son, Lawrence Lingle, married Elizabeth Mock 17 Sep 1823 in Ripley Co, IN, and was living there in the 1850 Census.

Jacob Lingle moved to Union Co, IL, near his brother Anthony. Jacob Lingle was not in Union Co, IL for the 1818 State Census, but Anthony Lingle was. Jacob Lingle died 18 Feb 1852 in Union Co, IL and was buried as Casper Cem in Anna, Union Co, IL.

Jacob's wife, Anna Maria Cruse, was born 27 May 1764 in Philadelphia Co, PA. (The part of Philadelphia Co, PA where she was born became Montgomery Co, PA in 1784, which it is to this day). She was baptized 17 Jun 1764 at St. Paul's Lutheran in Philadelphia Co (today Montgomery Co), PA. Her parents moved to Rowan Co, NC shortly afer. She died in 1854 in Union Co, IL and was buried at Casper Cem.

NOTE: Francis Lingle was enumerated twice in the 1820 Census (both times in Rowan Co, NC, once on p.246 and again on p.250, the numbers for both enumerations match exactly). Francis was also enumerated twice in 1810, one in Rowan Co, NC, p.299, and secondly in Cabarrus Co, NC, p.381, but the numbers are different. Francis owned land in both counties, but I believe his primary residence in 1810 was in Cabarrus, and the numbers for that enumeration seem much more accurate. The info for the 1810 enumeration in Rowan likely came from a neighbor and were thus inaccurate.

Little is known of Joseph Lingle, except that he was mentioned in Francis Lingle's will as one of his sons. Joseph Lingle probably died as a young man, with no children, after his father wrote his will in 1834. There was a male, 20-29 years old in the household of Francis Lingle in the 1830 Census of Rowan and this was very likely Joseph Lingle.

     7.  Casper4 Lingle (Lorentz3, Conrad2, Conrad1) was born 05/02/1754, and died 08/27/1826 in Rowan County, NC.  He married Molly Unknown

Notes for Casper Lingle:

Casper Lingle (2 May 1754 - before Feb 1828), son of Lorentz Lingle

Wife's name was Molly [maiden name unknown]. Will dated 27 Aug 1826 and probated Feb 1828 in Rowan. Names wife Molly; sons Adam, John, and Jacob; daughters Caty [Catherine], Elizabeth, Mary, Sally [Sarah], and Sofia; executors sons Jacob and John; witnesses Anna Roseman, Charles Severet, John Casper.

NOTE: Dr. Schlenker's book states a Daniel Lingle was listed as one of Casper's sons in his will, but that does not agree with the abstract of Casper's will by Jo Lynn White. I have not seen the actual will, but I believe that Dr. Schlenker was mistaken about this.

Adam Lingle, John Lingle, and Sarah Lingle, children of Casper Lingle, married three siblings, children of Jacob Tipps, Catherine Tipps, Mary Tipps, and David Tipps, respectively.

Notes for Conrad Lingle:

Peter Troutman (husband of Catherine Lingle) becomes guardian of his sons Conrad aNd George Lingle after their father, Conrad's death in 1794.  In Cabarrus court records, Peter Troutman was named the administrator of Conrad's estate.

Conrad Lingle (c1758 - Oct 1794), son of Lorentz Lingle

Married twice, first to Mary Elizabeth [maiden name unknown], second to Christina Sevetts [Savage]. Name of first wife from a 1782 deed record in which Conrad Lingel and his wife "Mary Lees" sold 220 acres to Leonard Klutz. "Mary Lees" was probably how the English clerk heard "Marieliss," a German nickname for Maria Elisabetha, or Mary Elizabeth in English. She must have died before Conrad married a second time to Christina Savage. Rowan Co, NC marriage bond says "Conrod Lingle" married "Christiana Sevetts" on 21 Oct 1790. Pastor Storch recorded this marriage as "Conrad Lingel" to "Christina Sewitz" on 21 Oct 1790. By his first wife, Conrad had three daughters, Barbara, Elizabeth, and Catherine. By his second wife, Conrad had two sons, Conrad and George. Conrad Lingle, Sr. died Oct 1794 and his funeral was preached by Pastor Storch on 15 Oct 1794. Cabarrus court records for October 1794 state that the administration of Conrad's estate was given to Christina Lingle (his widow) and Peter Troutman (his brother-in-law, married to his sister, Catherine). Conrad's widow, Christina, remarried to Lewis Fouts on 5 Jan 1797 in Cabarrus. Conrad's sons, Conrad and George, were named in the 1804 lawsuit as heirs of Conrad Lingle, deceased, and represented by their guardian, Peter Troutman (their uncle). I do not know why Conrad's daughters by his first marriage were not named in the lawsuit.

     10.  Anthony4 Lingle (Lorentz3, Conrad2, Conrad1) was born Bet. 1768 - 1770 in Rowan County, NC, and died 10/19/1836 in Jonesboro, Illinois, Union County.  He married (1) Elizabeth Dowland.    He married (2) Margaret Rebecca Cauble 05/20/1803 in Rowan County, North Carolina.  She died Bet. 1820 - 1830 in Union County, Illinois.  He married (3) Sarah Murphy 10/21/1834 in Union County, Illinois.

Notes for Anthony Lingle:

Anthony Lingle (c1764 - 10 Oct 1836), son of Lorentz Lingle

The 1830 Census of Union Co, IL shows Anthony Lingle as a white male age 50-59, implying he was born between 1770 and 1779. However, according to the will of Anthony's father, Lorentz Lingle, Anthony's brother, Jacob Lingle, was Lorentz's youngest son. According to the 1850 Census, Jacob was born c1765, so Anthony must have born before 1765.

In the 1790 Census, Anthony Lingle was listed in Rowan Co, NC with one white male over 16 (Anthony himself), and one white female. The white female may very likely have been his mother, Eve Catherine [maiden name unknown] Lingle, since there is no evidence Anthony was married by 1790. The 1800 Census of Rowan Co, NC shows Anthony Lingle with one white male 26-44, and one white female over 45. Again, this female was likely his mother. An interesting note to Anthony's household in 1800 is that he is listed with one slave (no gender or age given), the only occurence I have found of a North Carolina Lingle owning slaves.

Anthony married three times. His first marriage was to Elizabeth Dowland ("Dolen" in the record) in Rowan Co, NC, no date, but during the administration of Governor Spaight, was was governor of NC from 1792 to 1795. There were apparently no children from this marriage, and Elizabeth was likely dead by the 1800 Census, unless she was considerably older than Anthony and she was in fact the female over 45 in Anthony's household in the 1800 Census, instead of this being Anthony's mother, as speculated above. Anthony secondly married Margaret Rebecca Cauble 20 May 1803 in Rowan Co, NC. She was the mother of all of Anthony's known children. Margaret Rebecca died between 1820 and 1830 in Union Co, IL. Anthony married his third wife, Sarah Murphy (possibly not her maiden name, she may have been previously married), on 21 Oct 1834 in Union Co, IL.

A Henry Dowland was the bondsman of Anthony's first two marriages. According to a researcher of the Dowland family, this could have been Henry Dowland who was born c1746, or his son Henry Dowland who born in 1773 (or it could have been one of them for the first marriage, and the other for the second). The elder Henry Dowland was likely the father of Anthony's first wife.

Anthony Lingle's family was part of the great land rush to southern Illinois when that area was first opened up to settlers. Anthony's family moved to Union Co, IL in 1817. Anthony's nephews, Paul Lingle, Daniel Lingle, and John Lingle (all sons of Anthony's older brother, Francis Lingle), either accompanied Anthony on the migration to Union Co, IL, or followed very soon after him. Anthony's brother, Jacob Lingle, who had been living in Butler Co, OH and Ripley Co, IN, joined Anthony in Union Co, IL by the 1820 Census. The last Lingle family to move to Union Co, IL before 1850 was that of George Lingle, son of Conrad Lingle, who was another of Anthony's brothers. George Lingle moved to Union Co, IL in the 1830s and administered Anthony's estate in 1836.

Dr. Schlenker's book mentions a Perrin article on Alexander Wilson Lingle of Union Co, IL, son of Anthony Lingle. W. H. Perrin was a book publisher who, in the late 1800s, wrote books on the local history and residents of counties in Kentucky and Illinois (and maybe other states I do not know about). For example, The Illustrated History of Kentucky, 1885, by Perrin, has an article on Robert N. Bushart of Hickman Co, KY, part of my Bushart clan. Similar books were published by the Goodspeed Publishing Co. for areas in Tennessee and Arkansas. It should be noted that many of the articles in the these local histories are not entirely factual. Agents of Perrin simply interviewed residents and then wrote short biographies on them. Either the residents themselves, or Perrin's agents, often greatly exaggerated the exploits of these residents and their ancestors.

Anyhow, I have not seen the original article on Alexander Wilson Lingle of Union Co, IL. If anyone has a copy of the article, I would be glad to post it here. According to Schlenker, the Perrin article states that Alexander Wilson Lingle was born 2 Jan 1810 in Rowan Co, NC to Anthony Lingle and Margaret Cauble. The Perrin article further states that Anthony Lingle's family came to Union Co, IL in the fall of 1817 and settled 2 and a half miles south of Cobden, and that Anthony had only four children who lived to adulthood, all of whom were alive in 1882, when the article was written: Polly [Mary Elizabeth], Alexander Wilson, John A., and Peggy [Margaret].

Dr. Schlenker cites Union Co, IL probate records (Probate Book B, pages 165-169 and 278), which show that Anthony died 10 Oct 1836, with George Lingle appointed administrator, and that Anthony's heirs were his widow, Sarah Lingle, and children Mary Lentz, Wilson Lingle, John Lingle, and Peggy Lingle.
